LSU head coach Brian Kelly took up with officials on the field after a potentially game-changing unsportsmanlike penalty was called. The Tigers forced a quick three-and-out against Ole Miss in the fourth quarter just minutes after taking an 11-point lead — until the controversial penalty gave the Rebels a fresh set of downs and new life.

The penalty was called against freshman Harold Perkins Jr. after he shared words with an Ole Miss offensive lineman as the punting units were taking the field. Kelly was caught on the broadcast angrily asking Perkins what happened, while an equally-upset Perkins made his case. Kelly then saw a replay of what started the altercation and flipped to defending his player against the officials.

The replay showed Perkins was driven into the field by a lineman still blocking him as the play finished — seemingly well after the action. Perkins took issue and said something in retaliation, leading to his penalty and a renewed energy for the Rebels.

“Harold Perkins was called for unsportsmanlike conduct after LSU got a stop on third down. Brian Kelly was upset with him, then they showed a replay of Ole Miss pushing Perkins’ head into the grass and Kelly yelled at the refs,” explained The Advocate‘s Wilson Alexander.

Luckily for LSU and Perkins, the Tigers defense held up and forced a punt on the same drive after a holding penalty killed Ole Miss’ new momentum.
