Brian Kelly gives timetable on Major Burns neck injury
The LSU Tigers enjoyed another victory on Saturday against New Mexico, bumping the record up to 3-1. However, absent from the Tigers’ victory was safety, Major Burns. Burns was ruled out prior to the game with an injury to his neck. And after the game, LSU head coach Brian Kelly provided a timetable on his recovery and a brief update on his safety’s status going forward.
Kelly estimates that Burns could be out between 3-6 weeks as he recovers from his upper neck injury. Team doctors have cleared the Tigers’ safety to play, but the coaching staff feels it is best for him to rest in order to prevent further injury.
Despite Burns’s absence on Saturday night, the LSU defense pitched a shutout against New Mexico. The Lobos were suffocated on offense, only putting up 88 yards of total offense. They finished the game with 47 passing yards and 41 rushing yards. On third downs, New Mexico was a lowly 1-10, and the team had a total of nine punts in the game.
Burns’s presence in the secondary will be missed as LSU enters into the SEC conference play portion of their schedule. Up next for LSU is a trip to Auburn to face the other Tigers of the SEC West.

Injury update on LSU’s Jayden Daniels after New Mexico win
While the Tigers were only up 17-0 at half, they began to pour it on in the second half, despite injuries to a few of their star players, like quarterback Jayden Daniels. In the third quarter, at the end of a 16-yard run, Daniels was violently dragged down by two Lobos defenders. At the end of the play, he slammed his head on the turf. Following the game, BengalTiger’s Shea Dixon provided more clarity on details of the injury for Daniels.
He had a strain in his lower back, but was cleared by team doctors to return to the game, according to Dixon. LSU head coach Brian Kelly held him out of the game from that point on, since the game was well in hand. Many observers were worried that it was a possible concussion for Daniels because of the way that he slammed his head on the ground. However, that appears to not have been the case.
Before exiting with his injury in the third quarter, the dynamic dual-threat quarterback racked up 300 all-purpose yards. Daniels completed 24 of 29 passing attempts on Saturday, while throwing for 279 rushing yards. He also added 37 rushing yards on the ground on just nine carries.
