Everybody in Baton Rouge is happy with how Year One of Brian Kelly went. LSU was able to reach the SEC Championship game, surprisingly winning the SEC West thanks to a statement win at home against Alabama. Progress is being made at a quicker rate than normal and as a result, Kelly’s payments from the university are (accidentally) as well.

According to a report from Business Report, Kelly was paid an extra $1 million throughout the majority of the 2022 season. His monthly payments were doubled after LSU made a supplemental payment in May and continued all the way until November.

While there was an error on LSU’s end and Kelly will get to keep the money, there will be a way for the university to recoup everything. That will take place over the next 12 months and fixed before the calendar switches over to 2024.

“LSU management and Kelly—hired in November of 2021 with a 10-year, $95 million contract—have since enacted an adjusted pay schedule so that the school can recoup the funds by the end of 2023’s fiscal year, according to the report,” the report read.

Kelly’s LLC was the one who was receiving payments beginning in May, while Kelly himself also was receiving checks from LSU. A mistake uncovered by an audit, the Tigers will have to work their way back toward correcting things.

Hopefully, results on the field will continue to be just as good heading into the 2023 season. Maintaining the momentum built in his first season in charge will help Kelly work toward the goal of eventually winning a national championship.

LSU announces 2027 season opener against Houston

LSU and Houston have added a game against one another to their future schedules. The two teams will square off in 2027 at a neutral site, the Tigers announced Tuesday.

The game will take place at NRG Stadium, home of the Houston Texans, according to the announcement. LSU and Houston have only played each other twice in 1999 and 2000 — Nick Saban’s first year as the head coach of the Tigers.

“The city of Houston and the entire area of southeast Texas continues to be vital to the success of LSU, not only our football program, but the entire university,” Tigers head coach Brian Kelly said in a statement. “With more LSU alumni in that region than any other location outside of the state of Louisiana, it’s important that we have a strong presence in this area and this season-opening matchup will certainly enhance and strengthen the LSU brand in the state of Texas.”
