Jay Johnson praises Dylan Crews for off-field behavior
Dylan Crews is a great baseball player. However, after listening to LSU head coach Jay Johnson describe the Tiger’s off-field behavior, he might be an even greater person.
On the eve before LSU faces Tulane in the Baton Rouge Regional, Johnson met with the press to discuss the upcoming game. The conversation took an unexpected emotional turn when a reporter asked him about Crews’ kind-hearted actions.
“It’s amazing. One of my favorite memories honestly of two years of being the coach here is he had all those families on the field after our last home game on Tuesday night against McNeese. I literally just stood out there in disbelief, just watching how present he was,” Johnson recalled.
Crews’ career at LSU has been filled with kindness. The 2023 SEC Player of the Year has worked with an organization called Miracle League at Cypress Mounds since he first joined the team. He’s changed countless lives since.
Every game Crews donates tickets down the right field line to a family who has a disabled child. Additionally, Crews is involved with Team of Dreams in Gonzales, La.
The organization is an all-abilities baseball league, helping youth who use wheelchairs, individuals with physical disabilities or persons with intellectual disabilities. Perhaps the most heart-warming story of Crews’ time at LSU comes from a girl named Aubrey White.

White has non-verbal autism. Yet, after the star baseball player befriended the young girl, she began to repeatedly say two words: “Dylan Crews.” Johnson is not only impressed by Crews’ selfless actions, but because of his humility to do so.
“This guy can do whatever he wants. I mean, literally,” Johnson said. “He chooses to do things like that. Think of others first, people who aren’t as fortunate as him. That’s what I’m talking about. You have Mike Trout of college baseball that is like the greatest human being on the planet.”
He also might be the greatest player in college baseball. The stud outfielder is batting a ridiculous .420 this season with a .710 slugging percentage. LSU will need every hit to accomplish its goals.
