Jayden Daniels has been a special player this season for LSU. Where the defense has struggled thus far, Daniels has been the one to keep his team in games. The latest example came on Saturday against Missouri, willing LSU to a win and avoid a second SEC loss.

Brian Kelly has been amazed by what Daniels has done, saying the quarterback is playing at an elite level. The numbers back it up, being at the top of a few stats in the SEC and even nationally. Kelly knows Daniels put in the work this offseason and results are showing through six games.

“He’s playing at an elite level,” Kelly said during Wednesday’s SEC Coaches Teleconference. “He leads the SEC and ranks second nationally in total offense. He leads the SEC in total touchdowns and pass efficiency. His development has been well chronicled. He’s done all the things necessary to put himself in this position — he has worked his tail off. It’s great to see him have this kind of success. Our offense has really been driven a led by him.”

Heading into Saturday’s game against Auburn, Daniels has thrown for 1,969 yards, 19 touchdowns, and thrown just two interceptions. Add in 422 yards (5.6 yards per carry) plus four touchdowns and Daniels is doing nearly everything for LSU on offense. A truly incredible first half of the season.

As far as where Daniels stands all-time in Kelly’s eyes, he puts the LSU signal caller up there with “the great ones.” Only one other player under Kelly has surpassed some of the statistics Daniels has, proving how well he has played throughout his entire college career.

“I think quarterbacks have had different skill sets that have done great things,” Kelly said. “I think his ability to run when things are not there is unique. His speed, his durability, his toughness puts him up there with the great ones.

“I’ve had two that have 10,000 passing (yards) and 2,000 rushing. I’ve had two guys in this category and Daniels is clearly a guy that separates himself with his speed and his ability to make big plays with his feet.”

Kelly is correct about the toughness with Daniels. He has taken a few big shots already this season and for the most part, has popped right back up. Daniels is going to make sure he is on the field and ready to lead LSU to another SEC Championship game.
