JD PicKell: LSU could roll with the hot hand at quarterback
LSU still needs to decide on a starting quarterback. It was a competition that started with three quarterbacks competing for the job. However, with Myles Brennan’s retirement, there are only two quarterbacks remaining in the competition–Jayden Daniels and Garrett Nussmeier.
Now, On3’s J.D. PicKell explains that he thinks Brian Kelly and LSU could be rolling with the hot hand at quarterback moving forward.
“If Jayden Daniels is the guy who starts for you game one. Is that his job or is that his role?” J.D. PicKell asked on The Hard Count.
The question, then, is whether Jayden Daniels is getting the keys to the car, or if they’re just seeing how he looks in a live game. J.D. PicKell believes that Daniels deserves to start for LSU to open up the season. He has the experience and athleticism to back him up. However, there’s no reason why Brian Kelly needs to be devoted to him for the year.
“It may be a matter where they just play the hot hand and as this team develops, as this run game and the offensive line develops, you play the guy who’s moving the offense the best,” PicKell said of the LSU quarterback situation.

Garrett Nussmeier can stretch the offense vertically in a way LSU really hasn’t been able to and probably won’t be able to do with Jayden Daniels. That way the Tigers would be able to take advantage of the weapons that they have on the outside. Nussmeier can do that. However, Daniels is much more athletic and adds a dimension in the quarterback running game.
Brian Kelly was evasive when talking about using multiple quarterbacks in a game this year for LSU. At the same time, it’s worth remembering he used as many as three in a game last season with Notre Dame.
“I think Jayden Daniels starts the year,” J.D. PicKell emphasized. “But I think Garrett Nussmeier by game eight has the LSU quarterback job.”
