LSU head coach Kim Mulkey doesn't like a call during a women's college basketball game between the Lady Vols and LSU at Thompson-Boling Arena at Food City Center on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2025.

Saturday night at the SEC Tournament brings us a great matchup between LSU and Texas. Two of the best teams in the country but Kim Mulkey is not too happy with the way her team has started. Down two entering the second quarter, the Tigers are struggling offensively.

Specifically with the shot selection according to Mulkey. Texas is pressing out of the inbounds and LSU has been able to get the ball across comfortably. Mulkey would just like to see some better shots put up once in the halfcourt, mainly around the rim.

“On the offensive end, we’re taking quick shots,” Mulkey told ESPN’s Holly Rowe. “We beat their little press and then we go down there and jack up bad shots. That’s what they do. The uglier the game, the better. Control the flow of the game and give yourself a good look at the rim.”

The mindset from Mulkey quickly switched over to the defensive end, though. Not many teams have had success defending Madison Booker, the SEC Player of the Year. LSU did have success in their regular season game thanks to a great performance from Flau’Jae Johnson.

Well, Johnson is not playing Saturday due to an injury. Mulkey knows defending Booker is going to be difficult due to length. The goal is to just battle down low as the first half comes to a close.

“We don’t have Flau’Jae, we don’t have that length,” Mulkey said. “Booker can just elevate over what we have out there. So just keep battling.”

Booker finished with 16 points on Feb. 16 when LSU came to Austin. That number is a little deceiving though as she shot just three of 17 from the floor. The free throw line is where Booker made her money from a scoring perspective, going 10 of 10.

As Mulkey mentioned, Johnson was the primary defender back then. Without her, Booker’s 6-1 frame is going to be a lot to handle moving forward.

A spot in the SEC Tournament championship game is on the line. South Carolina has already clinched a spot after taking down Oklahoma earlier in the day. The Gamecocks have gone to battle with both LSU and Texas in recent times.

Cutting down the nets in Greenville would make history for LSU. It’s been over two decades since winning the SEC Tournament, hoping to add a new piece of silverware to the trophy room under Mulkey.
