Kim Mulkey and the LSU Tigers are headed to the Elite Eight after a tremendous win following some drama involving an article from The Washington Post.

The article, which Mulkey has been adamant about in the media over the last week, dropped on Saturday morning, prior to LSU’s clash with 2-seed UCLA in the Sweet 16. However, it didn’t dampen the afternoon for the Tigers, as Mulkey’s team secured a win, and their coach a major bonus.

According to Steve Berkowitz of USA TODAY Sports, Mulkey added a $50,000 bonus to her net worth on Saturday, a nice chunk of change to go along with her $160,000 in bonuses so far throughout the 2023-2024 campaign.

“LSU coach Kim Mulkey picks up $50,000 bonus as Tigers beat UCLA to reach NCAA women’s round of 8,” Berkowitz posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Mulkey has $160,000 in bonuses so far.”

Alas, LSU will now await the winner of the Iowa Hawkeyes and Colorado Buffaloes, the former representing a rematch with Caitlin Clark’s squad from last season’s title game, where the Tigers were victorious. We’ll see who they’re matched up against by the end of Saturday.

Kim Mulkey opens up on Washington Post profile piece: ‘Are you really surprised?’

Moreover,  the aforementioned Washington Post published a lengthy profile piece on LSU women’s basketball coach Kim Mulkey on Saturday morning, just hours before the Tigers’ victory on Saturday. Mulkey had previously drawn attention to the upcoming profile, noting that the Post was out to get her using “sleazy tactics and hatchet jobs.”

Needless to say, her reaction once the piece was actually published was going to be highly anticipated. But just before the game against the Bruins, Mulkey told ESPN’s Holly Rowe that she hasn’t yet read the piece.

“You’re telling me something I didn’t know,” Kim Mulkey said. “So you’re the bearer of good news or bad news, however you want to look at it. But are you really surprised? Are you really surprised by the timing of it?

“But I can tell you that I haven’t read it. I don’t know that I will read it. I’ll leave that up to my attorneys.”

Mulkey’s attorneys were cited heavily in the lengthy profile piece, used to deny certain aspects of the story.

The piece itself focused quite a bit on Mulkey’s family life, specifically her relationship with her estranged father, who was unfaithful to his wife, Mulkey’s mother. The dynamic between the two was described as rather frosty, with the two not in contact for years at this point.

It also looked some at Mulkey’s actions around gay or queer players, specifically comments she allegedly made about various wardrobe choices. A handful of former players are quoted in the story. In any case, Kim Mulkey will likely have further comment at some point, perhaps after she’s had a chance to read the piece or after her attorneys have gone over it.
