Kim Mulkey refuses to put a 'timetable on coaching'
LSU’s Kim Mulkey isn’t putting an expiration date on her coaching career just yet.
Fresh off bringing LSU a national title, the former Baylor leader explained that she’s not leaving the game anytime soon, expecting to be with the Tigers for the long haul.
“Well, I don’t ever put a timetable on coaching,” started Mulkey. “I was never going to be a coach. I got talked into it by the president of Louisiana Tech University, Dr. F.J. Taylor. He started the program over there, and he wouldn’t take no for an answer.
“Thank God he didn’t. He knew more what I was supposed to be doing than I did.”
That’s great news for LSU fans, as the Tigers look primed to do some more winning under Mulkey’s guidance. Continuing, she explained how the LSU brass has helped her get the program to where she wanted it to go, and why being on the same page has escalated their success.
“I played for legendary coach Leon Barmore, Pat Summitt in the ’84 Olympics. You follow leaders that fit your personality. If a leader doesn’t fit your personality, you go find a leader that does,” added Kim Mulkey. “I want you to look up there on those stairs right there. There’s my AD. There’s my president. There’s my administration. That’s who I get to work for every day. That’s who I get to work for. They don’t try to control you. They make you follow the rules, and they get out of your way, and they don’t miss a thing when it comes to helping me build a program.
“There are things they do I don’t want to do. I don’t want to have to learn all the things that they have to do. But I knew when I came back to Louisiana and I had my first meeting with Scott Woodward really, and he said something to me, and I said this is where I’m going to end it. He’s my kind of leader. We talk the same language.”

Evidently, Mulkey has a lot of love for the aforementioned Woodward, who she explained “gets it” when it comes to the job he’s doing.
“I don’t know if that’s a Louisiana thing. He’s from Baton Rouge. I’m from Hammond. But he just — he gets it. He gets it. He gets out of the way,” stated Mulkey. “You see, he doesn’t have to be and doesn’t want to be the most important person in the athletic department, but he’s the most powerful person in the athletic department.
“He can fire any of us, and he’s our boss. He wouldn’t even go out there tonight and cut the net down. I begged Dr. Tate to cut the net down with his LSU jacket on. Those are the kind of leaders I want to be around.”
It’s easy to see why Kim Mulkey won’t put a timetable on her coaching career, as she loves her gig at LSU. As long as she keeps winning, she’ll be in Baton Rouge for the foreseeable future.
