Leonard Fournette hints at LSU coaching future
Before he was a first-round pick and Super Bowl champion in the NFL, Leonard Fournette was a star running back at LSU. But while waiting to find out his next steps in the league, he hinted at a potential coaching future.
Fournette volunteered to join LSU’s staff if running backs coach Frank Wilson ever decides to step away. Should that day come, the former No. 4 overall pick said he’d be “the first” to make an effort to join the staff in Baton Rouge.
Fournette last played in the NFL last season with the Buffalo Bills. The franchise released him in January, and he’s been searching for his next team ever since.
“When coach Frank Wilson decides to step away from LSU, I’ll be the first to try to be the running backs coach of the program……” Fournette wrote on X Wednesday evening.
Fournette was a first team All-SEC selection and consensus All-American as a sophomore at LSU in 2015 when he put together a monster season. He ran for 1,953 yards and 22 touchdowns to finish fifth in the Heisman Trophy voting. Although he only appeared in seven games as a junior, he still totaled 843 yards and eight touchdowns before going No. 4 overall in the NFL Draft to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Fournette made an immediate impact as a rookie, running for 1,040 yards and a career-high nine touchdowns while adding 302 receiving yards and a touchdown. But in 2020, he got his first Super Bowl ring after latching on with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. That year, he totaled 367 yards and six touchdowns across 13 games to win his first title.
All told, across his seven years in the league, Leonard Fournette has 4,518 rushing yards, 2,219 receiving yards and 41 total touchdowns. But as he weighs his next steps in the league, coaching could wind up in the cards down the road, and maybe his alma mater will come calling.
LSU is coming off a massive victory in Week 7, defeating Ole Miss in overtime at Tiger Stadium. The Tigers will now look to keep the momentum going this week against Arkansas in primetime.
