LSU defensive lineman Jay’Viar Suggs has entered the NCAA transfer portal, On3 has learned.

A product of the 2019 recruiting class, he will have one year of eligibility remaining for the 2025 college football season.

Suggs logged 10 total tackles for the Tigers in 2024 including two pass breakups and 2.5 sacks. He recorded tackles in eight games for LSU this past season.

Before college, Suggs was the No. 433 overall player in his recruiting class and the No. 40 defensive lineman, according to the On3 Industry Rankings, which is a proprietary algorithm that compiles ratings and rankings from all four primary recruiting media services.

He previously played for Grand Valley State before transferring to LSU in 2023.

It’s not all bad portal news for LSU on Wednesday, though. Starting quarterback Garrett Nussmeier announced that he was coming back to Baton Rouge for another season. Many believed he would choose to enter the 2025 NFL Draft but is now set to lead the Tigers into the new year.

The portal officially opened on Monday, Dec. 9, 2024. More than 2,800 FBS scholarship players entered their names into the NCAA’s transfer database during the 2023-24 school year. Removing those who withdrew or went pro, the final total sat at 2,707 transfers.

That means roughly 25 percent of all FBS scholarship players hit free agency in one year, per On3’s Pete Nakos.
