LSU‘s 32-31 overtime upset win over Alabama will not only go down as one of the biggest moments of the college football season, but one that put the Tigers in the driver’s seat for winning the SEC West. LSU now controls their own destiny, and are just a few wins away from representing the west in the SEC Championship game. With the conference and divisional title in sight, head coach Brian Kelly was asked what his team’s mentality is with championship potential looming.

“Our goal is to graduate champions, so part of this is they want to be champions, and they know that there are steps along the way in this process of getting there and so this week will be another step towards becoming a champion,” Kelly said.

The Tigers have definitely been taking the right steps under Kelly in his first season as their head coach. After losing in week 1 to Florida State, the Tigers put together five straight wins, followed by three more following their week 6 loss to Tennessee.

Their latest two wins have been against top-ten-ranked SEC opponents, as they’ve quickly turned heads and established themselves as one of the top teams in the country. But Kelly believes their success on Saturdays all starts with doing all of the little things right each day during the week leading up to the game.

“And so let’s do the things that we need to do, and it starts with today. Being early, being on time, making sure that they’re intentional about everything we do,” Kelly said. “So yeah, championships are important, that’s what they’re here for, and getting to class today is what they’re here for.”

Kelly is trying to keep the Tigers where their feet are, but they aren’t naive, as they look to balance taking care of their business that is right in front of them and striving towards their championship aspirations.

“So it definitely starts, but we’re not gonna walk in with a PowerPoint on the SEC Championship race and who’s got what and all those things, but yeah it’s there. It’s out there and they know what they’re going for,” Kelly said.

It sounds like Kelly doesn’t have to spell out the importance and stakes of their final three weeks of the season, as look to keep their top position atop the SEC West this weekend as they take on Arkansas on the road at noon this Saturday.
