LSU head coach Brian Kelly made headlines following their week 1 loss to Florida State, when he pointed out that reporters were late to a press conference and joked that a $10 penalty should be put in place. LSU beat writer Leah Vann responded quickly saying, maybe if he had won that she’d be on time.

Kelley appeared to be late to the Tiger’s press conference this week and came prepared to pay up with his own personal $10 for his lateness.

“There’s my ten dollars, let’s get that out of the way right away” Kelley joked holding up a ten-dollar bill. “I’ve paid my debts. I’ll take a money order from The Advocate, I don’t take a check, because it might bounce.”

Vann quickly responded that her check would not bounce, to which Kelly again joked that he assumed her fine would come as a business expense.

Last week’s encounter definitely seemed a little uncomfortable, especially following Kelly’s LSU coaching debut, but it’s clear that Kelly is now in a better place with the LSU media.

LSU coach Brian Kelly took a joke about his debut loss in stride as a reporter during his press conference on Tuesday made fun of the loss. Kelly opened the conference to questions while pointing out a reporter who was a late arrival — only to have her respond that she would be on time if he won.

The joke immediately seemed to annoy Kelly as he began to explain being on time had nothing to do with wins or losses, but ultimately the situation cooled down after the reporter apologized for her off-the-cuff joke.

“Press conference was at noon, I was running from a doctor’s appointment. Got there at 11:57. Brian Kelly called me out, said jokingly I owed him $10, I said if he won maybe I’d be on time. Not my finest hour. I apologized afterward, he was super chill and said I still owe him $10,” explained Leah Vann of her joke.

Although Kelly took the strange moment in stride, the overall pressure to win early at LSU continues to be a talking point around the program. LSU previously grew impatient with their poor record under former head coach Ed Orgeron, leading to his firing and bringing in Kelly from Notre Dame as a big-name replacement.
