LSU lands Mississippi State WR Zavion Thomas out of transfer portal
Former Mississippi State wide receiver Zavion Thomas has committed to LSU after entering the transfer portal following the 2023 season. On3’s Hayes Fawcett reported the news.
He played at Mississippi State for two years, making six starts. Thomas did not start in his freshman season, but made significant contributions on special teams. As a freshman, he ranked fifth nationally, second in the SEC, in punt return average with 13.5 yards per return along with one touchdown. He did not slow down in his sophomore season, again racing past opponents with impressive averages while scoring one touchdown off a kickoff return this time.
Thomas’ real flourish in 2023 came as a wide receiver. He was no longer an exclusive special teamer and emerged as the second-leading pass catcher in a Bulldog offense that really struggled to move the ball through the air. Thomas wound up with 503 yards and one touchdown on 40 catches this season before hitting the portal. Now, he’ll be an LSU Tiger, where success at receiver has been pretty abundant lately.
Thomas played high school football at Marrero (La.) John Ehret, where he was a four-star prospect. He was the No. 302 overall recruit in the 2022 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
