As LSU tries to avenge a Week 1 loss to Florida State, it’ll be without a key playmaker. BJ Ojulari has officially been ruled out.

Ojulari was seen in sweats ahead of the Tigers’ Week 2 matchup against Southern on Saturday, according to The Athletic’s Brody Miller. He totaled six tackles in last week’s game against Florida State before suffering an injury. The Bengal Tiger’s Billy Embody first reported Ojulari would miss the game.

As a result, he won’t be in action for the second game of the Brian Kelly Era in Baton Rouge.

Ojulari is also one of the leaders for LSU this year and was chosen to wear the No. 18 jersey, which is given to players who best exemplify Tigers football. That’s another reason why his loss is big for Kelly’s group Saturday night.

Brian Kelly opens up on the significance of LSU’s Week 2 matchup against Southern

Brian Kelly left Notre Dame for LSU and immediately the expectations were incredibly high for him in his first season. Then, in Week 1, LSU lost to Florida State. Now, heading into Week 2 against FCS Southern, the Tigers need to figure a few things out in Week 2.

Significantly, this is the first time these two schools, both based in Baton Rouge, have ever played one another. While speaking to the media, Kelly discussed the importance of this game for both the city and the players.

“I think it’s exciting for the city to have two teams playing together, celebrates the accomplishments of both universities,” Kelly said. “You know, the city itself, you know a flagship university like LSU and certainly a great institution, a traditional HBCU University like Southern, bringing them both together I think is an incredible thing for this city,” Brian Kelly said.
