LSU two-sport standout Trey’Dez Green will reportedly be stepping away from the basketball team to focus on his academics, according to a report from NOLA.com.

Green joined the basketball team following football season, appearing in six games.

He has averaged just 6.7 minutes per contest, scoring 1.8 points per game and securing 1.7 rebounds per outing. So his contributions on the hardwood won’t be sorely missed, though the Tigers will hope to get him back before too long.

“Just after visiting with coach (Brian) Kelly and Trey’Dez, the academic workload is very heavy, so he’s going to be focusing on those academics for the time being and rejoin us at a later date,” basketball coach Matt McMahon said.

Despite the relatively meager numbers on paper, McMahon has been thoroughly impressed by what he’s seen from the two-sport standout.

At 6 foot 7, 245 pounds, Trey’Dez Green has been a physical presence in the frontcourt.

“I have such respect for what he’s doing,” McMahon said via Matthew Brune of On3’s The Bengal Tiger. “He wasn’t in a single meeting or practice until after the bowl game. He’s a great teammate and brings great energy in practice. He can defend multiple positions and grabbed a few rebounds.”

Trey’Dez Green biographical information

Green played high school football and basketball at Jackson (LA) Zachary, where he was a five-star prospect. He was the No. 31 overall recruit in the 2024 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Football programs all over the country were giving Green scholarship opportunities. After all, it’s easy to see why somebody at 6 foot 7, 245 pounds with Green’s athleticism would be coveted on the football field. But Division I schools were coming after him as a basketball player too.

LSU offered Trey’Dez Green in basketball on Sept. 23, 2021. Just under a month later, Ed Orgeron extended a football scholarship. Texas A&M was the only other power conference program to show interest in Green in basketball but plenty of mid-majors expressed interest.
