Not a lot went right for LSU this season as they finished last in the SEC at 2-16. However, one bright spot was graduate senior KJ Williams who earned a well-deserved honor as a member of the All-SEC Second Team.

Matt McMahon applauded his former Murray State Racer turned LSU Tiger during media on Monday. He said it’s a credit to the development he continued to show in his game this season and how that growth showed in his production out on the floor.

“I think it’s a great credit to him and the processes he’s followed in his development as a player. You’ve seen him expand his game and get better every single year,” said McMahon. “The ability for him to consistently shoot the ball well from the three-point line? It ended up being a huge difference maker for him this season. I think he’s always shown he’s a versatile scorer in the post. He’s improved his passing out of the post against the double teams. And he’s been really good in ball screen attacks.”

Williams averaged just a hair off of his career high in points this season at 17.4 per game. He did it on his career-worst field goal percentage at 48.9%, though, which is forgivable considering his jump up from the Ohio Valley to the SEC. Still, he traded that off by shooting a career-best from three at 41.9%. Add in 7.6 rebounds, 1.2 steals, and 0.8 blocks and he easily made the case as LSU’s most impactful piece.

McMahon knows Williams wishes he had been able to accomplish this in a way that led to his team winning more games during their campaign. Even so, McMahon is excited for the next step of Williams’ career considering what he proved he could do this year.

“He’s had a great season,” McMahon said. “He’ll be the first to tell you he’s done a lot of winning throughout this career. And I know he’s disappointed (we) couldn’t win more this year. But overall? I think he really helped to add value to himself as he looks to his professional career in the future.”
