The Matt McMahon era is off and running in the Bayou. The new LSU hoops coach kicked off his Tigers tenure with a home victory over a pesky UMKC team. LSU led throughout and never felt in peril against the Kangaroos, but the matchup was competitive and never in a blowout state.

According to McMahon, sharper execution and wiser decision-making in the final minutes could’ve prevented a somewhat close game at the end. When asked about his team’s performance after the game, McMahon was quick to praise, though he wasn’t afraid to call out some glaring issues. When asked if he saw places for his team to improve, he was quick to respond, “Oh I certainly think so,” before delving into the good and bad from the first win of his Tigers career.

Here were the full comments:

“I mean, you look at the game and credit to UMKC with their zone and their physicality. I thought it bothered us. And, you know, for us, a lot of positives to take away. You look at the field goal percentage defense, three-point defense is always a really important stat to us, hold them to 25%.

“But the corrections there in the first half, we got hurt on the offensive glass. We put them on the free throw line too often. And then in the last 10 minutes of the game we really made some eye-opening poor decisions that led to turnovers and allowed them to hang around those final eight minutes.”

So a lot to love and hate for Matt McMahon from his team’s debut performance. The Tigers were able to defeat the UMKC zone and for the most part held stout defensively. Just some massive brain farts in the final minutes that made it a much closer contest than it should’ve been.

After the UMKC win, LSU doesn’t play again until Saturday evening at 6 p.m. — and no, the basketball team isn’t competing with football. Brian Kelly’s group kicks off at noon-time (11 a.m. central) at SEC West foe Arkansas. Plan your day accordingly, Tiger fans. Too much tailgating and partying in the stands and you won’t be awake to watch a thrilling LSU hoops game against Arkansas State. Tigers trying to take down the state of Arkansas on Saturday.
