On Saturday, Tennessee traveled to LSU and beat the Tigers 77-56. One of the biggest issues for LSU in the game, according to head coach Matt McMahon, was the turnovers that plagued the Tigers throughout the game.

McMahon explained after the game that LSU played itself out of contention in the game by committing turnovers. Some of those turnovers were because of Tennessee but many were also self-inflicted.

“It doesn’t give you any kind of chance to win, to be in the game,” Matt McMahon said. “They’re really good at it, and I think they lead the country in steals and number one defense in the country for a reason, but we’ve got to find a way to eliminate some of the simple ones.”

LSU had 19 turnovers in the loss to Tennessee, which was more than double the amount that the Volunteers committed.

“Simple passes that need to be completed because now you’re playing at a disadvantage in the open floor and, as I said in the opener, they make you pay every single time.”

Now, LSU is looking to bounce back on Tuesday night against a struggling Arkansas team.

Matt McMahon on how analytics can help LSU

Now having lost six games in a row, Matt McMahon and the LSU Tigers are looking for answers. So, they’re turning more and more toward analytics.

“Yeah, I think we’re in a situation where we’ve got to try different things and try and find different ways to be more efficient at both ends of the court,” Matt McMahon said.

“We talked earlier this week, sometimes when you’re really struggling to score, how can you try to create some easier baskets? I thought you saw that in the first six minutes of the second half against Auburn. We were able to force some turnovers, force some tougher shots that led to some longer rebounds that got us out in transition and got some easier baskets there.”
