Not too long ago, Trey’Dez Green was on the football field, playing for LSU during their bowl game against Baylor. The former five-star prospect made an impact for the Tigers this past season and the future appears bright. But now, he is working with Matt McMahon and the basketball team, getting his first action on Saturday against Alabama.

Green played just nine minutes in Tuscaloosa, putting up two points, and snagging three rebounds. It might not seem like much but McMahon has a ton of respect for what Green has done with his time with the basketball team. Not many can change sports this quickly while providing valuable in-game minutes with a positive mindset.

“I have such respect for what he’s doing,” McMahon said via Matthew Brune of On3’s The Bengal Tiger. “He wasn’t in a single meeting or practice until after the bowl game. He’s a great teammate and brings great energy in practice. He can defend multiple positions and grabbed a few rebounds.”

The lone points of the night from Green came after creating a play for himself. Alabama’s Chris Youngblood was pulling up for three but Green stepped in with a blocked shot. He then broke away for a transition dunk late in the first half.

Even in limited action, it’s not the type of play you would expect somebody who was playing football a few weeks ago to make.

LSU will be back in action on Wednesday, hosting Auburn. Green will have an even tougher test heading his way as the No. 1 team in the country travels to Baton Rouge. McMahon did not speak if Green’s role will expand as the season progresses but for now, it’s nothing but high praises.

Trey’Dez Green was highly recruited in both football and basketball

Green played high school football and basketball at Jackson (LA) Zachary, where he was a five-star prospect. He was the No. 31 overall recruit in the 2024 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Football programs all over the country were giving Green scholarship opportunities. After all, it’s easy to see why somebody at 6-7, 230 pounds with Green’s athleticism is coveted on the football field. But Division I schools were coming after him as a basketball player too.

LSU offered Green in basketball on Sept. 23, 2021. Just under a month later, Ed Orgeron extended a football scholarship. Texas A&M was the only other power conference program to show interest in Green in basketball but plenty of mid-majors expressed interest.
