Miami Marlins select LSU star Jacob Berry in 2022 MLB Draft
Former LSU baseball star Jacob Berry reaped the benefits of his hard work with the Tigers, being selected sixth overall by the Miami Marlins. Berry played in the College World Series with Arizona before transferring to LSU for last season — an experience that helped him become one of the top prospects of the major leagues.
LSU’s Jacob Berry selected sixth overall in draft
The 2022 MLB Draft saw five of the first six draft picks go towards hitters in a hitting-heavy first round of the draft, with the lone exception being former Vanderbilt ace Kumar Rocker. Berry is a proven talent coming out of the college ranks, and now will begin his path to the MLB level with the Miami Marlins organization.
Berry is the second-highest draft pick in LSU history behind Alex Bregman in 2015, when he was selected second overall. He joins Todd Walker in 1994 and Mike Miley in 1974 as the only four Tigers drafted in the top ten of the MLB draft.
Berry recorded 77 hits and 15 home runs with the Tigers, batting an incredible .370 average as he appeared to dramatically improve his discipline at the plate. With Arizona, he batted .352 with 52 strikeouts — before dropping that number to just 22 strikeouts at LSU. He finished his college career with a slugging percentage of .655 and an OPS of 1.105.

Prior to the draft, Berry attributed his year with LSU to his growth as an upcoming professional with the experience of changing schools being similar to the constant moving that will come with his road to MLB action.
“Yeah, that’s how everything’s gonna go nowadays from here on out. I’m gonna be moving places — I think it was a good learning experience for me to go to LSU this year. I had a great experience, LSU fans are unreal. It was a quick move though from the College World Series to Baton Rouge. I’m just excited I did it.”
