Mike Denbrock reveals timeline for naming LSU's starting quarterback
LSU is a program going through significant changes. New head coach Brian Kelly, along with his offensive coordinator Mike Debrock, have a challenge in front of them. That includes walking into a quarterback competition between the veteran Myles Brennan, the talented and young Garrett Nussmeier, and the transfer Jayden Daniels.
Now, Mike Denbrock has given a timeline for the decision to be made. As he points out, the decision belongs to Brian Kelly. It’s likely going to come when the Tigers need to buckle down and get ready to win games this season, though it could happen earlier.
“There comes a line of demarcation of we’ve got to get ready to win game one and who gives us the best opportunity to do that,” Mike Denbrock said. “We’re not, as you know, anywhere close to that yet but those decisions will be made by Coach Kelly, obviously, when that cutoff happens. And, hopefully, it’s an easy decision. Maybe somebody actually really separated themselves enough where it’s so obvious that the decision happens sooner. Maybe there’s two guys that are just battling each other and it’s awesome–maybe it’s three. The more the merrier at times. But we also got to get ready to play the season and get ready to win football games.”
Also, according to Mike Denbrock, the quarterback evaluation is an all-encompassing one. Experience alone, for instance, won’t win someone the job. Neither will having the best natural arm talent. The quarterback who wins the job needs to be the all-around best.

“This is a complete evaluation as we can make. This is leadership, this is knowledge of the offense, this is making the players that are there to be made, this is making the clutch throw, this is, you know what I mean? Protecting the football. It’s kind of all-encompassing. There’s not gonna be one thing that goes boom, it’s over.”
Brian Kelly updated the LSU quarterback competition too
Along with offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock, head coach Brian Kelly has also fielded questions about the quarterback competition. He gave an update ahead of Fall camp.
“I think they’re all anxious to prove what they can do–they want that opportunity,” Brian Kelly said. “They’ve prepared really hard, they’re all in great shape. Their mental preparation–you can see it–it’s so further along than it was now that they know the playbook. I think they’re all anxious to get out there and have the opportunities to showcase what they can do. And (the first day of fall training camp), again was much more of an understanding of the basic tenets of footwork and across the field progressions, those kinds of things, and you can see that they’re already past that. They’re ready to move to the next level.”
