Noah Cain sees John Emery locked in entering 2023 season
The questions about LSU running back John Emery have never been about his talent. Instead, after returning to LSU in 2022 after missing the 2021 season, Emery had to miss spring to focus on his academics.
Despite those issues, fellow running back Noah Cain says that John Emery is locked in ahead of the 2023 season.
“John is good, man,” Cain said. “John has been working ever since he came back for Fall Camp. Man, he’s been locked in from what I’ve seen and he’s been ready to go, ready to learn, ready to help the young guy be better.”
Despite missing time this spring, Noah Cain also noted that John Emery has become a leader on the offense and is mentoring the younger running backs on the team.
“He understands that leadership role he has as well to help guys, Trey [Holly] and Kaleb [Jackson], to bring those guys along so they’re ready to play when their opportunity comes.”
During his college career, John Emery has played in 30 games. A five-star recruit in the 2019 cycle, Emery has rushed for 941 yards on 190 carries with 13 touchdowns during his career. He also has 13 receptions and two touchdowns through the air. In 2023, Emery hopes to be a contributor for LSU.
That running back unit for LSU is deep and it’s a spot that head coach Brian Kelly isn’t worried about right now.

Alabama WR to transfer
“No I’m not concerned there, I think we’re gonna have really good depth, I think another year in the program for everybody understanding what we want from that position,” Kelly said.
“I don’t know that there was gonna be one player that’s gonna be getting all the carries, but I think a number of those guys are going to contribute at a high level for us. And I think when you look at LSU’s running backs you’re going to say wow, they keep bringing in fresh backs throughout four quarters and that’s what makes them so difficult to defend.”
Noah Cain on his message to LSU’s young running backs
In Fall Camp, Noah Cain also has a message for LSU’s young running backs.
“Of course right now we’ve got guys that aren’t in the mix right now, they’ll be back coming towards the summer and in camp. But like right now man it’s really all about controlling what you can, impressing the coaches every day, every opportunity you get. Because it’s not like this all the time where you’ve got this many opportunities to showcase your skillset to the coaches, and get better, and receive coaching,” Cain said.
“So I tell Trey and even other young guys in the room man y’all just got to take coaching and make the most of your opportunities every day, because circumstances could change at any moment in this game. So you got to just be prepared.”
