After leading the Murray State men’s basketball program to much success, Matt McMahon has received a head coaching gig in the SEC at LSU – and the new Tigers’ leader is set to be highly compensated at his new school.

As reported by Wilson Alexander of the The Advocate newspaper in Baton Rouge, LSU has signed McMahon to a seven-year contract that will begin paying the head coach $2.6 million per year and later increase to $3.2 million annually.

In addition to McMahon’s salary, he’ll also receive an extra contract year if LSU’s program gets hit with a multi-year postseason ban by the NCAA or loses two scholarships for at least three years as the outcome of the Notice of Allegations that forced the Tigers to fire former head coach Will Wade.

McMahon, 43, compiled a 154-67 overall record during his time at Murray State and led the Racers to a phenomenal season in 2021-22 – which included 31 wins and a trip to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

LOOK: Matt McMahon makes first appearance as LSU coach

The LSU Tigers new men’s basketball coach has made his first public appearance since the announcement was reported about his hiring. The Tigers officially announced the hire of Murray State head coach Matt McMahon on Monday evening. McMahon takes over after the Tigers fired former head coach Will Wade for cause. And now that he’s taken over, McMahon is wasting very little time taking in LSU basketball.

McMahon was spotted in attendance at the Tigers’ NCAA women’s tournament game against the Ohio State Buckeyes. As you can see in the photos below, the new LSU men’s basketball head man is already showing off some school spirit with a dash of purple.

The announcement of McMahon hire comes after On3’s Billy Embody reported he was favorite on Sunday night. McMahon reportedly picked the LSU job over interest from South Carolina.

On3’s Justin Rudolph contributed to this report.
