Kansas City free agent Tyrann Mathieu is still holding on for his perfect fit for 2022 but this week, the proud LSU alum spoke about one major factor in his success over the last three seasons.

Mathieu gave a massive thumbs up to Brian Kelly’s hiring of new LSU defensive coordinator Matt House on The Jordy Culotta Show this week. He credited his interceptions to House’s “golden nuggets” of defensive wisdom as linebackers coach for the Chiefs.

“Let me tell you, I caught maybe 14-15 interceptions in the last two-three years,” Mathieu said. “Ten of those came on first and second down. Coach House was our first and second down, drop-back coach, he’s the guy that comes up to the front of the room and gives you the notes.

“If you’re paying attention and being attentive, you can really capitalize on that. Most people don’t know this, but most of the interceptions that I caught on first and second down, had nothing to do with me. I just happened to be listening to Coach House. Understanding what the team wants. He’s one of those dudes though, he’s going to give you like golden nuggets.”

The NFL safety and LSU legend is holding out for what he believes his talent is worth in 2022. NFL insider Ian Rapoport shared that the former Tiger has received offers – but none that have met expectations so far.

“Yeah, look he could have signed,” Rapoport said. “It’s, ‘Are you getting the contract you want? That you’ve earned.’ The really good ones who know their value will just hang out and wait. It doesn’t always work out, but a lot of times it does. Because if you’re a great player, you have all the leverage. You’re a great player. You just have to be patient and hang with it a little bit.”

Matt House shares what Mathieu, Edwards-Helaire taught him about LSU

Before ever accepting the job at LSU, Matt House knew that the Tigers have some very strong support from former players in the Pros. Two of the biggest recent alums, Tyrann Mathieu and Clyde Edwards-Helaire, were on the Chiefs’ roster during the time he spent in Kansas City, so he’s already experienced it first hand.

“I’m going to tell you what, of any place I’ve been, this has the most passionate former players I’ve ever seen,” House said in a recent press conference.

The new Tigers’ defensive coordinator said their passion for the program stood out in a significant way, which made it easier for him to take the position when Kelly offered.

“Whether it was Clyde, whether it was T5, those guys love this university, they love this state and they want to do anything they can do to help it be successful. And that’s pretty neat. It’s neat to be a part of,” House said.
