LSU got out to a fast start in the second half of Saturday’s game against Mississippi State. With LSU leading 7-3, quarterback Max Johnson and wide receiver Kayshon Boutte connected on a long 64-yard touchdown pass to take a 14-3 lead.

Boutte lined up on the left side of the line of scrimmage on the play. The play was a run-pass option for Johnson, and he pulled the ball back after getting the overhead safety to bite on the run. Boutte then made a sharp cut to the middle of the field, leaving the corner covering him in the dust. From there, it was a straightaway dash to the endzone for Boutte.

The touchdown was the second of the day for Boutte. He also caught an 11-yard score in the first quarter. As of the time of the second touchdown, Boutte had three receptions for 76 yards and the two touchdowns in the game.

Boutte had a strong freshman season last year for LSU

When wide receiver Terrace Marshall opted out of LSU’s season in November last season, Boutte quickly turned into the Tigers’ main target on the offense. He set the SEC record for receiving yards in LSU’s final game of the season against Ole Miss with 308 yards and three touchdowns on 14 receptions.

Boutte led LSU with 735 receiving yards in 2020 and was second on the team with 45 receptions and five touchdowns. He had three consecutive 100-yard receiving performances to end the season against Alabama, Florida, and Ole Miss. Boutte’s strong finish earned him Freshman All-America and Freshman All-SEC honors.

In LSU’s first three games of the 2021 season, Boutte had 20 receptions for 224 yards and six touchdowns. He is averaging 11.2 yards per reception.

In his recruitment, Boutte was rated as a four-star wide receiver and the top receiver out of the state of Louisiana.
