The Marquette Golden Eagles took care of business in handling the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Eagles won the game by double digits and didn’t have to sweat anything down the stretch. But that doesn’t mean the game was played without controversy. There was a controversial flagrant two foul assessed on Marquette forward David Joplin, when there was some contact made between Joplin and Notre Dame forward Nate Laszewski on a screen. Joplin ended up accidentally making contact with Laszewski’s family jewels when the two made contact. He was clearly in pain and on the ground. But the contact definitely looked like an accident.

It’s definitely pretty surprising that Joplin was ejected on the play. That seems like a pretty liberal interpretation of a flagrant two foul, but that’s what the referees decided after an official review. Marquette won the game, 79-64.

Marquette outrebounded Notre Dame on the glass, 36-28. The Golden Eagles were paced by Kam Jones, who stuffed the stat sheet with 25 points, six rebounds, and two assists. Marquette also had an impressive double-double from Oso Ighodaro, who stuffed the stat sheet with 16 points, 18 rebounds, and three assists. Nate Laszewski led Notre Dame with 20 points and seven rebounds in the losing effort.
