Former Florida wide receiver Jacob Copeland announces transfer destination
Former Florida Gators wide receiver Jacob Copeland recently decided to enter his name into the transfer portal and find a new home in college football. On Christmas Eve, he officially announced he’s joining the Maryland Terrapins on his Twitter page.
The graphic reads: “Gainesville to the Shell“
He didn’t say anything in the announcement, but sometimes saying less is more and he doesn’t really need to explain much with the graphic. Against UCF in the Gasparilla Bowl, Copeland hauled in two catches for 35 receiving yards and no touchdowns.
The Terrapins are officially getting themselves a very solid receiver. In 2021, Copeland hauled in 41 catches for 642 receiving yards, while bringing in four receiving touchdowns. In the 2019 and 2020 seasons for the Gators, he snagged a combined 44 catches for over 700 receiving yards and five receiving touchdowns.
In 2021, Copeland’s season-high of receiving yards came on Sept. 11 against South Florida, when he hauled in 175 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
In joining Maryland, he’ll join quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa, the younger brother of Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. Taulia Tagovailoa was at Alabama before transferring to the Terrapins, so Copeland is following the same path in traveling from the SEC to the Big Ten.

A former four-star recruit, Copeland visited schools like Tennessee, Alabama, and Texas A&M before signing with the Gators. For the 2018 recruiting cycle, he was selected to the Under Armour All-American Game. Over the course of his storied career for Escambia (Pensacola, Fla.), Copeland hauled in 2,261 receiving yards and 19 touchdowns on 104 receptions.
The Gators’ loss is the Terrapins’ gain in this instance. New Florida head coach Billy Napier will have to look for some receiver talent to replace him.
Copeland and his new team, the Maryland Terrapins, will kick off their 2022 season on Sept. 3 against the Buffalo Bulls.
