Former Texas A&M, Arizona head coach Kevin Sumlin lands new coaching opportunity at Maryland

Kevin Sumlin is coming back to college football. Maryland is set to hire him as its tight ends coach, sources told On3’s Matt Zenitz.

Sumlin brings plenty of head coaching experience to College Park, previously serving as the head coach at Houston, Texas A&M and Arizona during his career. He got his first head coaching opportunity with the Cougars in 2008 and stayed there until 2011 when they finished 12-1. He then took over at Texas A&M, where he took the Aggies to six straight bowl games before his firing following the 2017 season. He then latched on with Arizona, where he struggled to a 9-20 mark over three seasons.

Overall, Sumlin has a 95-63 record as a college head coach. He also won Conference USA Coach of the Year twice with Houston in 2009 and 2011 and won SEC Coach of the Year in 2012 — his first year with Texas A&M.

Sumlin spent the 2022 season as the head coach and general manager of the Houston Gamblers of the USFL. They went 3-7 and missed out on the playoffs.

After a career as a quarterback at Purdue from 1983-86, Sumlin got his coaching start at Washington State in 1989 as a graduate assistant. He bounced around as an assistant coach over the next few years, working at Wyoming from 1991-92, Minnesota from 1993-97 and eventually returned to Purdue from 1998-2000. That’s when he landed at Texas A&M the first time as an assistant, serving as the Aggies’ assistant head coach, wide receivers coach and offensive coordinator from 2001-02.

Sumlin then worked at Oklahoma as tight ends coach and special teams coordinator from 2003 before moving up to co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach from 2006-07. That’s when he landed the head coaching job at Houston.
