Maryland knocks off Ohio State in front of former championship team
The Maryland Terrapins took down the Ohio State Buckeyes on Sunday, as the 2002 national championship team was in attendance. Maryland won 75-60 in front of their home crowd and the greatest team in their school’s history, as they were honored at halftime for the 20th anniversary of their tournament win.
Maryland upsets Ohio State
Maryland played on Sunday like a team that had more energy from the beginning and their defense gave Ohio State trouble. The Terrapins recorded eight steals and held the Buckeyes to just 36.2 percent shooting from the field, while only committing 15 fouls all game. Ohio State had their chances from three-point range, but a poor shooting day sealed their chances of winning by shooting just 8-for-28 from long distance.

While celebrating the team’s big win on social media, Maryland admitted the win meant more to them given the nature of the halftime ceremony honoring their former players. “DID IT FOR THE CHAMPS,” read the team’s Twitter recap, highlighting how special the victory was on Sunday.
The reunion of the former national championship team was special for another reason according to the former players — as it was the first time they believed they had all been together since that season. Twenty years ago, Maryland defeated Indiana in the NCAA championship game for the only championship in school history. Having reached the Final Four in 2001, they fell to Duke after building a 22-point lead and wondered if they would be able to reach that level again. The following season, they managed to complete what they had started and won it all.
