Over 20 Power Four programs have offered Gaithersburg (Md.) Quince Orchard four-star running back Iverson Howard throughout his recruitment. None hit “Rocket” as hard as Maryland, however.

Michigan and Florida State were also top contenders, but the local Terrapins won out for the 5-foot-10 burner on Tuesday. Less than 20 miles from campus, the decision to stay home means everything to Howard.

“I’m staying home. I feel that a lot of Florida boys stay in their area and I feel no different on the reason why us 301 boys shouldn’t stay home, too,” Howard told On3. “Stefon Diggs was my favorite player growing up and I love hearing about his story. I’m picking Maryland over Michigan and FSU because I believe I can do big things in my own city.”

Howard has been to Maryland around eight times since 2021. Head coach Mike Locksley and the Terps staff have long made him a top priority in College Park — and Howard has felt the love from the home-state school.

“I built a strong relationship with Coach Locks and Coach JT. I believe this is the big jump we need at Maryland,” Howard said. “I love the way Coach Locks runs the program. He treats every athlete like a young man in the real world and develops you on and off the field.”

“I love the environment,” he added. “I can tell how the program changed these past years it is definitely home for me.”

Howard: ‘I want to create my own path’

Howard ultimately came to his decision last week. Both Michigan and FSU were appealing, but leaving a mark close to home at the next level ultimately won out in the end.

“It was a tough decision between Michigan, FSU and Maryland, but I want to create my own path,” he said.

Howard is the No. 410 overall prospect and No. 33 RB in the 2025 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He’s also the No. 12 player in Maryland.

On3 ranks Howard as a four-star recruit, a top-25 tailback and a top-10 player in the state. He checks in at No. 273 overall in the 2025 On300.
