On Tuesday, the Maryland Terrapin’s football program found themselves at a position that not too many teams find themselves in, after making a hire. The Terrapins had agreed to terms with Kevin Steele to become the team’s newest defensive coordinator and even had him assisting with recruiting. However, like a boat made out of bread, that deal quickly disintegrated when Steele left Maryland high and dry to join the Miami Hurricanes. But fans of the program have no fear as Maryland has quickly bounced back and found themselves another to fill the position.

According to On3’s Matt Zenitz, sources close to the program expect the Terrapins to promote co-defensive coordinator and defensive line coach Brian Williams to the position of defensive coordinator. Williams is a former Georgia Bulldogs, Florida State Seminoles, and UAB staffer. Over his last two seasons with Maryland, he has been the Terrapin’s defensive play-caller.

Additional details revealed on Kevin Steele leaving Maryland for Miami job

For those who follow college football, this sequence of events would definitely constitute as confusing, to say the least. But fortunately, FOX Sports Bruce Feldman reveals some behind-the-scenes workings and information to make sense of it all.

“The Kevin Steele deal shows just how wild the CFB hiring process is. He’d verbally accepted the Maryland job last wk, started working Friday, & was recruiting for the Terps. This afternoon, while sitting in his office at Maryland, he told them that he was taking the Canes DC job,” wrote Feldman via Twitter.

Steele has worked at some of the biggest programs in the country, most recently working at Tennessee as the interim head coach between Jeremy Pruitt and Josh Heupel. Before then, he was the defensive coordinator for Auburn and has held the same position at Alabama, Clemson, and LSU.

Ross Dellenger of Sports Illustrated also chimed in, posting this picture to show everybody how strong Maryland’s conviction was that they had found their man.
