ESPN Play-by-play announcer Anish Shroff said it best about the fate that awaited Maryland head coach Mike Locksley after his Terrapins team bested North Carolina State, 16-12, in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl. “Get ready, Mike Locksley,” Shroff said on air as Maryland started to wind out the clock following a late interception.

Up next for Locksley: A date with a cooler full of mayonnaise to be poured over him. His players joined in once the postgame festivities kicked off, chanting “Where the mayo at?” as the trophy was being presented.

“I’ll do anything for a win, to a degree,” Locksley said.

Adding to the bit? Locksley sported one of the “big hats” that Washington Commanders running back Brian Robinson Jr. popularized weeks ago.

“I figured this’d be great cover,” Locksley said.

He did eventually take it off and got the condiment on his noggin.

“I figured they were done,” he said. “… thanks for the mayo bath. It’ll be good for my complexion.”

The internet quickly turned to debating whether or not the hat was cheating the true spirit of the mayo bath, but Locksley apparently knows the maker of the hats. And the image is something only college football can produce.

Maryland scored the only touchdown in what turned into a field goal exhibition — the kickers went a combined 7-for-7. Quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa completed 19-of-37 pass attempts for 221 yards and a touchdown to help overcome two interceptions of his own.

And at the end when the Wolfpack had a chance to drive and win, the Terrapins defense showed up with an interception to ice the game. And then it was Shroff warning Locksley of what was to come. And the head coach had a great sense of humor about it, probably a tad easier after a bowl win to cap off the season.
