UT Rio Grande Valley transfer forward Hasan Abdul Hakim commits to Memphis

Former UT Rio Grande Valley forward Hasan Abdul Hakim has committed to Memphis via the NCAA Transfer Portal. Abdul Hakim was the No. 276 overall player and No. 50 small forward in On3’s 2025 Transfer Portal Player Rankings.
Abdul Hakim made 12 appearances and nine starts for UT Rio Grande Valley last season. He averaged 13.3 points, 6.8 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game while shooting 48.0% from the field and 32.7% from beyond the arc.
Abdul Hakim caught the attention of coaches around the nation last season when he exploded for 26 points, 11 rebounds and four assists in 31 minutes against Creighton. Although UT Rio Grande Valley ultimately fell 99-86, onlookers couldn’t help but be impressed by Abdul Hakim. In January, UTRGV head coach Kahil Fennell confirmed that Abdul Hakim was no longer on the team.
“Hasan’s no longer a part of the team,” Fennell said. “Unfortunate kind of situation. Absolutely wish him all the best going forward. He’s going to go off and do great things.
“I don’t think one person is going to supersede 15 points a game or 7 rebounds per game and do that all on his own,” Fennell said. “I think it’s going to be the group. Everybody has to chip in. Everybody has to be a part of the solution.”
Abdul Hakim played high school basketball at Gunn Academy in Canada, where he was an unranked prospect, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He played his first two collegiate seasons at Santa Fe College.
