Andrew Walters announces return to Miami baseball
The Baltimore Orioles selected Miami pitcher Andrew Walters in the 18th round of the 2022 MLB Draft. Playing professionally was a dream Walters could have realized now. Instead, the right handed pitcher has turned down the pros and has decided that he will return to Coral Gables for his junior season.
Walters made the announcement that he’d return to the mound at Mark Light Field earlier this morning on Twitter.
“I am excited to announced that I have the privilege to wear #21 again for the University of Miami!,” said Walters in the post. “I am ready to get back to work with the best teammates in college baseball.”
Andrew Walters led the ACC last season with 14 saves. Opponents batted .116 against him as Walters posted a 1.65 ERA in ’21-’22. Walters’ efforts were rewarded as he was named a First-Team All American last year.

While the prospect of turning pro and the money that would come with it is nice, it doesn’t provide the opportunity Walters will have this season. Walters’ brother, Brian, is transferring to Miami next season. Passing up a chance to play with his brother again is something Walters says he couldn’t pass up.
“Next season, I get to experience that dream alongside my younger brother, Brian,” said Walters. “I am sure it will be something neither of us will forget for the rest of our lives.”
Miami baseball finished 40-20 last season. The Hurricanes even hosted a regional in the 2022 NCAA Tournament. However, a pair of losses to eventual champion Ole Miss and then Arizona ended Miami’s season early. Now, Walters is back with his brother in hopes of avenging that opportunity this season. If so, the Hurricanes will compete to be back in the College World Series for the first time since they made back to back appearances in 2015 and 2016.
