Report: Bill Courtney expected to replace Jim Larranaga as Miami interim head coach
Miami associate head coach Bill Courtney is expected to be named the Hurricanes interim head coach, per multiple reports. The news comes following Jim Larranaga‘s sudden decision to step down Thursday, according to the AP’s Tim Reynolds.
Larranaga, who led the Hurricanes and George Mason to the Final Four, is expected to formally step down and announce his retirement in a 1:30 pm ET press conference, per college basketball insider Jon Rothstein. The Hurricanes are 4-8 this season, and the 75-year-old Larranaga reportedly believes that it is time for a change.
Courtney is in his seventh season at Miami, and third as the associate head coach. Courtney has previous head coaching experience with Cornell, where he led the Big Red to a 60-113 record between 2010-16. Cornell previously worked under Larranaga from 1996-2005 at Bowling Green and George Mason.
Courtney was a key piece of the Hurricanes’ staff that produced its best season to date, going 29-8 (15-5 in the ACC) en route to earning the program’s first-ever Final Four bid in 2022-23. During that season, Miami set or tied program records in overall, ACC, regular season (24), home (16), top-25 (seven), top-10 (three) and top-five (two) victories. The team placed third in the year-end USA TODAY Coaches Poll, its best finish ever.

Larranaga is the winningest coach in Miami basketball history. He has been with the program since the 2011-12 season. He reached the NCAA Tournament six times during his time at Miami, including making the Elite 8 in 2022 and Final 4 in 2023. However, the Hurricanes had a losing record in 2023-24 and appear on their way to having another losing season in 2024-25.
Miami started out the 2024-25 season with three straight wins, before losing seven games in a row. That stretch included losses to Drake, Charleston Southern and VCU. Larranaga and Miami did bounce back to beat Presbyterian on Dec. 15, before falling to Mount St. Mary’s in overtime on Dec. 21.
Miami’s next game is at Boston College on Wednesday, Jan. 1. It will be the second ACC game for the Hurricanes, who are currently 0-1 in the league. The next home game for Miami is against Florida State on Wednesday, Jan. 8.
