Booger McFarland predicts Cam Ward will win the Heisman Trophy
Booger McFarland believes Miami quarterback Cam Ward will be holding the Heisman Trophy come December. The ESPN analyst called Ward “the best quarterback in the country” during Tuesday College Football Playoff rankings reveal show, crediting him for the Hurricanes earning the No. 4 spot.
It’s hard to argue as Ward leads the country with 29 passing touchdowns in addition to 3,146 yards and only six interceptions. He also has Miami off to a 9-0 start with a good chance to end the regular season undefeated and play for an ACC title.
All that led to McFarland making his prediction, though he prefaced it with the fact that he has questions about Miami as a national championship contender elsewhere.
“I think Cam Ward is going to win the Heisman Trophy,” he said. “He’s been that good throughout this college football season. But he has to be because he’s gotta make up for some of the deficiencies on this team. Defensively, I still have questions about them. Running the football, can they do it consistently?
“But Cam Ward covers up for a multitude of sins for that team. I would not want to face him because he’s been the best quarterback in the country in making plays for his team.”

It’s not exactly a bold prediction, as Ward is currently tied with Colorado cornerback and receiver Travis Hunter for the best odds to win the Heisman. Still, he has not only the impressive numbers but the results on the field to back it up in terms of victories.
Miami currently leads the country in points per game (47.4) and yards per play (7.7). However, to McFarland’s point, it also ranks 53rd in points allowed.
Thanks to Ward, however, this is the best season that Hurricanes have seen in several years. He’s done more than enough to cement himself as a Heisman candidate with a real chance to win college football’s most coveted individual award.
