Former Cincinnati wide receiver Tony Johnson has committed to Miami via the NCAA Transfer Portal, per On3’s Hayes Fawcett. Johnson transferred to Cincinnati last offseason after spending three years at Florida Atlantic, including a redshirt season.

In his lone campaign with the Bearcats, Johnson made 12 appearances and eight starts. He recorded 48 catches for 449 yards and six touchdowns. He averaged 9.4 yards per receptions.

Johnson began his collegiate career as walk-on at FAU. However, he eventually worked his way onto a scholarship and, further, a starting spot. In two seasons at FAU, Johnson amassed 60 catches for 669 yards and seven TDs.

Tony Johnson played high school football at Vanguard (FL), where he was an unranked prospect in the 2021 recruiting cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. Johnson was also recruited by Kentucky and Florida State while in the transfer portal.

He is the 16th player Miami has added via the transfer portal this offseason. In comparison, the Hurricanes have lost 21 players to the portal. They are currently ranked No. 5 in On3’s 2025 Team Transfer Portal Rankings.

Johnson will have transfer QB Carson Beck throwing to him next season. Beck was the No. 1 overall player in the transfer portal this offseason. The 6-foot-4 standout completed 64.7% of his passes for 3,485 yards and 28 touchdowns while throwing 12 interceptions at Georgia last season.

He will replace quarterback Cam Ward, who was the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Miami head coach Mario Cristobal is excited to see what Beck can accomplish with the Hurricanes.

“He’s athletic, he’s smart, he’s got superior arm talent, he’s accurate, he can extend plays, he can also sit in the pocket, he runs well,” Cristobal said earlier this year. “He’s a great human being and he’s demonstrated leadership qualities. He’s really hard on himself, he wants to be great and one of his best qualities is that he wanted to be at Miami.”
