Miami Hurricanes’ head basketball coach Jim Larranaga announced a new addition to his coaching staff on Friday evening. He hired Dewan Hernandez to the Hurricanes’ 2023-2024 coaching staff, the team announced in a press release on their website.

Hernandez played for the Hurricanes from 2016-2018 and will serve as the team’s Director of Player Personnel for the upcoming season. He’ll be joining one of the most successful coaches in college basketball history in Jim Larranaga. Larranaga is one of only two college basketball coaches in the history of the sport to take two teams seeded No. 5 or lower to the Final Four from two different schools. The other is Larry Brown.

Not only is Larranaga the winningest coach in Miami basketball history, but he also guided the school to their first Final Four appearance in 2023.

Dewan Hernandez playing career highlights

Hernandez was drafted in the 2019 NBA Draft in the second round by the Toronto Raptors. He was eventually sent to the G League–the NBA’s developmental league, where he played for Raptors 905–the Toronto Raptors G League affiliate. After a brief stint in the G League for a few years, he spent time on various teams in Europe, including Hapoel Tel Aviv and Vaqueros de Bayamon.

As a sophomore with the Hurricanes, he stuffed the stat sheet with 11.4 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. Hernandez was the only Miami player to start all 32 games. He managed to score in double figures in 20 games for the ‘Canes, including three 20-plus point outings. His first double-double came against the Navy Midshipmen, where he stuffed the stat sheet with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Against the 12th ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers, he erupted for a career-high 23 points. Hernandez also had a dominant showing against the Duke Blue Devils, pumping in 18 points with a career-high 13 rebounds.

Miami outlook for the 2023-2024 college basketball season

Miami returns a loaded roster yet again for the 2023-2024 college basketball season. They were recently picked second place in the ACC Preseason Poll.

Last year’s regular season title was just the program’s third ever, with one of those occurring in the Big East. Never has Miami been able to earn back-to-back regular-season crowns but Jim Larranaga has set all kinds of records in Coral Gables.

Norchad Omier will be the main piece for Miami, being named preseason All-ACC first-team. He could have gone to the NBA, but decided for another year with the Hurricanes following their Final Four appearance.
