James Williams is 'ready to go,' Mario Cristobal says
After “getting banged up” at practice early last week, former five-star recruit and sophomore defensive back James Williams‘s status has been updated by Miami head coach Mario Cristobal.
“James is doing well. Seems to be healthy and ready to go,” Cristobal said Monday. “No issues.”

The status update is a welcome one for ‘Canes fans, as Williams has been one of Miami’s main contributors on defense, currently second on the team with 32 tackles. He has also recorded five pass breakups, a forced fumble and an interception, to go along with a half tackle for a loss – all just one year after emerging as an impact player as a true freshman.
Williams appeared in 10 games in 2021 in his first season at Miami, earning seven starts as he was tabbed All-ACC Honorable Mention following the season. He picked up right where he left off this year, and will look to continue on his strong path as Miami tries to salvage the rest of its season.

Luckily, his first game back will be a big one. Under the bright lights in Hard Rock Stadium, Miami will look to defeat bitter rival Florida State. On Monday, Cristobal spoke to the magnitude that this rivalry has on both programs, and why it’s so important to have all hands on deck for the big-time matchup.
“When you play in this rivalry, you recognize, especially during that time, that this is the best rivalry. That’s all you ever thought about in the off-season,” he said. “As a coach, as a head coach, as a graduate assistant, you make sure everybody else is focused on all the things that are important to making it the best that you can possibly make it.”
Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET live on ABC.
