Former Miami star, assistant recruiting director arrested on Saturday
Miami Hurricanes assistant director of recruiting Mike Rumph was arrested in South Florida on Saturday. The former NFL first-round pick was charged with a felony, driving with a suspended license for a third time.
“Miami Hurricanes’ Mike Rumph was arrested in South Florida on Saturday. Rumph was charged with a felony, driving with a suspended license for the third time,” tweeted FOX Sports’ Andy Slater. “The former NFL first-round pick is currently the assistant director of recruiting for the Canes.
“Rumph’s license was suspended for allegedly not completing a court-ordered driving-school class. Rumph, who has received 30 traffic tickets in South Florida since 2008, bonded out of jail for $750.”
After spending five seasons as Miami’s cornerbacks coach, Rumph is entering his first season as assistant director of recruiting for the Hurricanes football program in 2021. In his playing days, the San Francisco 49ers made Rumph the 27th overall pick of the 2002 NFL Draft.
As a pro, Rumph accumulated three interceptions over his five year NFL career. In addition to the 49ers, Rumph played for the Washington Football Team and St. Louis Rams.

Moreover, Rumph was a member of the Hurricanes team that won the 2001 National Championship. Prior to returning to his alma mater, the former Miami star was a the head coach at American Heritage High School (Plantation, Fla).
At American Heritage High School, Rumph began his coaching career as the school’s defensive coordinator. After two season, he worked his way up to the head coach position.
According to the Miami website, Rumph guided the Patriots to three straight Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) state playoff appearances and compiled an overall record of 39-6 in one of Florida’s most competitive districts.
After joining the Hurricanes coaching staff, he helped make their secondary into one of the most competitive in the nation. As a whole, the Hurricanes defense was ranked No. 4 in the nation in total defense in 2018 and were No. 1 in team tackles for loss, passing yards allowed and third down defense.
