For the first time in program history, Miami will be participating in the Final Four. Taking a tough road through the Midwest region, the Hurricanes have faced off against some tough opponents. Guard Isaiah Wong has been a huge factor in the run, with the UConn Huskies next up in Houston.

When Wong, a native of the northeast, was going through the recruiting process — he said Miami and UConn were who he chose between. Deciding to head to Coral Gables, he will now be facing off against the Huskies in the Final Four. Heading into Saturday’s game Wong still has a ton of respect for the program.

“It was like my top three decisions,” Wong said. “It was Miami, UConn, and another school. But it was just close, I feel like. And if he would — he showed me a good time over there. I got to meet a lot of people on the team, and they were all great people over there, and he was just a great coach, I feel like.”

Wong described why UConn was in the running, talking about all the people involved with the program. While his heart may have always been with Miami and head coach Jim Larrañaga, there was at least something for the guard to think about. He could have been telling the same story but during UConn’s availability.

“I feel the coaching staff, when they had Fisher, he was a great coach, and he talked to me a lot,” Wong said. “I felt real comfortable being around him. And Coach L was a great coach. And I felt at the time I was already committed to Miami and I really had my decision made.

“But when I visited UConn, I was like it’s going to be a hard decision coming in because they have a great coaching staff. They have great people over there, too. And they have great players over there. Just love the way they work, too. It was a hard decision. But I already had my mind set on Miami, and it was up between them two.”

While Wong may have respect for UConn, he will be looking to get a win on Saturday night. Miami has never competed for a national championship and with how the bracket is set up, the Hurricanes will feel like they have a great opportunity.

Win or lose in the Final Four, Isaiah Wong made the right decision for himself.
