Haley Cavinder Reveals Process Of Decommitting From Tcu To Return To Miami | 05.29.24

The Cavinder twins are back in college basketball, with both Haley Cavinder and Hanna Cavinder set to play the 2024-2025 season with the Miami Hurricanes. Hanna spent some time away from the sport, taking last year off while Haley was committed to playing for the TCU Horned Frogs at some point.

But when Hanna announced she would be coming back and playing for Miami, Haley flipped her commitment back to the program they both know. The process of decommitting from TCU was not an easy one for her, being big on loyalty and not taking back the word she gave head coach Mark Campbell.

“My Dad is very big on loyalty and when you give somebody your word,” Cavinder said during Monday’s episode of Andy Staples On3. “So, it wasn’t a quick one, obviously. I’m like ‘Dad, I’m going to play with my twin sister.’ But as a respect to TCU’s program, definitely thought about it for two, three weeks. Because at the end of the day, you give somebody your word. But also, it’s my sibling and my best friend.”

Cavinder spent the 2022-2023 season with Miami, guiding the Hurricanes to the program’s second-ever Sweet Sixteen and first Elite Eight. She averaged 12.2 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game while shooting over 40% from the field. The performances were enough to see her listed on All-ACC teams.

Fresno State was where Cavinder’s career began, winning a slew of awards while out West. Cavinder was named the Mountain West Player of the Year for the 2020-2021 season after scoring 19.8 points per game while hauling out an average of 7.5 rebounds and 3.8 assists.

Haley Cavinder has short stint with TCU Horned Frogs

The news of Cavinder committing to TCU was announced in November, just a few weeks after officially entering the NCAA transfer portal. At that point, the 2023-2024 season had begun but Cavinder never wound up making an appearance for the Horned Frogs. A short stint in Fort Worth for the guard.

Campbell was able to find another star in the portal, landing LSU‘s Hailey van Lith. This will be van Lith’s third school in as many years after spending one season with the Tigers. She averaged 15.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 2.5 assists under head coach Kim Mulkey.

Not a bad replacement for TCU, still landing one of the biggest stars in women’s college basketball. On3’s Talia Goodman named the Horned Frogs as one of the winners of the transfer portal this offseason.
