Jim Larranaga announces promotion for assistant coach Bill Courtney
Jim Larranaga and the Miami Hurricanes are making some staff changes as the spring semester comes to a close. On Monday, the team announced the promotion of assistant coach Bill Courtney to associate head coach.
Courtney, going into his fourth year with Miami, is taking over the associate head coach role after the departure of Chris Caputo. Caputo left to become the head coach of George Washington at the beginning of April.
“I’m incredibly honored to step into this role at Miami. I want to express my sincere thanks to both Jim Larrañaga and Dan Radakovich for their faith and trust in me,” Courtney wrote in the press release. “It is truly a privilege to put on the ‘U’ each and every day. To do so while working for a great man like Coach L is uniquely special. I’m so excited to continue to build this program and look forward to helping us create more memories in the years to come.”
Courtney has been coaching for 26 years, including 12 years with Larranaga. The duo and the rest of the Canes staff took Miami to the first Elite Eight in program history in 2021-22.
“Throughout his 12 years on my staff, including the last three at Miami, Bill Courtney has proven again and again just how valuable he is. Bill is an excellent recruiter, a tremendous coach and, most importantly, a fantastic leader and mentor of young men,” Larranaga wrote. “He is an essential part of Miami basketball and helped bring us to unprecedented heights this year. Dan Radakovich, who has aided our program so much, and I both know just how instrumental Bill is to the success of this team, both in the past and in our assuredly bright future. Bill’s new position represents just that.”

Miami adds Charlotte 49ers assistant
Larranaga made a big addition to his Miami staff last week in Charlotte assistant Kotie Kimble.
Over the last five seasons, Kimble helped the 49ers steadily improve. According to the program’s website, the assistant coach was a huge factor in Charlotte signing the top-ranked recruiting class in Conference USA in each of the last four years.
Additionally, Kimble has widespread respect among the conference. In a poll of at least 20 Conference USA coaches from Stadium and Jeff Goodman, Kimble was named one of the Top Assistant Coaches in the conference.
Last season, Kimble helped the program have its best season since he joined the staff. The 49ers amassed a 17-14 record, going over .500 in their conference for the first time since the 2009-10 season.
