Miami hosted Opa Locka (Fla.) Monsignor Pace five-star defensive lineman and top recruiting target Shemar Stewart on an unofficial visit yesterday.

The visit comes just one day after Miami coaching staff made a midnight visit to Stewart the moment the dead period opened.

Stewart is down to three schools: Georgia, Texas A&M and the Hurricanes. Texas A&M has been believed to be in the lead for the last few months, but the momentum has seemed to flip towards Miami in recent weeks.

That is because Mario Cristobal and his staff have made Stewart a priority from the moment Cristobal took over as head coach.

“Coach Cristobal said I am a must-get for him and Miami as soon as we talked,” Stewart told On3’s Chad Simmons. “He said I must stay home and that there is no other place but Miami for me. … It has been the same message since.”

Shemar Stewart is the top uncommitted recruit left on the board

Shemar Stewart is the No. 7 prospect in the 2022 cycle, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He is the No. 2 defensive lineman in the country behind only Five-Star Plus+ prospect Walter Nolen  and the top prospect in the state of Florida.

On3 Director of Scouting and Rankings Charles Power named Stewart one of the top performers from the Under Armour All-American Game and heaped more praise on the five-star prospect this past week.

“Stewart is big and filled out – he looks all of 6-foot-5, 270-pounds,” Power said. “The Miami native was among the better defensive linemen over the course of the week at Under Armour. He was not as consistent day-over-day as (Mykel) Williams or (Walter) Nolen at each respective game but flashed some considerable upside. Stewart has the capability of being a powerful rusher. He’ll need to hone the technical side of his game. To this point, we’ve really seen most of his upside manifest in high-level plays in pursuit. You don’t usually see players at Stewart’s size track down running backs from the back side.”
