Miami Hurricanes head football coach Mario Cristobal has yet to complete his coaching staff for the upcoming season. And a lack of coaches could be considered a problem right now, especially when it comes to recruiting. But according to Hurricane beat writer Adam Lichtenstein, the new Miami headman feels like he and his program are unaffected by the coaching shortage.

“Those things, I get it, they’re part of the process, I think more and more as time goes on, families aren’t going to tie themselves to a position coach. That’s a flimsy foundation,” said Cristobal.

The Hurricanes head coach might be on to something with that belief. According to the current On3 recruiting class rankings, Miami currently has the 11th best class in 2022. Among some of his signees is top 100 recruit Lake Charles College Prep running back Trevonte’ Citizen; who picked the Hurricanes over his home state powerhouse program LSU. Cristobal and Miami also landed four-star defensive lineman Ahmad Moten and two offensive linemen: Matthew McCoy and Anez Cooper.

Cristobal lands a new defensive coordinator

The Miami Hurricanes football program still has at least one more major hole to fill and that is their defensive coordinator position. And now it looks like the Hurricanes have zeroed in on the next man for the job. According to Matt Zenitz, sources close to the program say that Miami is targeting coveted veteran defensive coordinator Kevin Steele for the position.

Steele has worked at some of the biggest programs in the country, most recently working at Tennessee as the interim head coach between Jeremy Pruitt and Josh Heupel. Before then, he was the defensive coordinator for Auburn and has held the same position at Alabama, Clemson, and LSU.

As it currently stands, two major programs are vying for the services of Steele; The Hurricanes and the Big Ten’s Maryland Terrapins. On Friday, news broke that the Terrapins Were eyeing the veteran defensive coordinator and were close to finalizing a deal. But as of Tuesday, it appears that those plans have been put on ice, and Steele is headed to the sunny beaches of Florida as the newest member of the Hurricanes coaching staff.
