Mario Cristobal confirms 'nothing is bothering' Tyler Van Dyke after Georgia Tech game
The Miami Hurricanes dropped a frustrating game to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. During the game, quarterback Tyler Van Dyke struggled to find consistency. This led to some questions about how healthy he was physically.
However, after the game, head coach Mario Cristobal explained that there wasn’t anything wrong with him physically. He just struggled against Georgia Tech.
“Just wasn’t his best game,” Mario Cristobal said. “Great effort. He hit some big throws. Some other throws, he’d like to have back, but nothing bothering him — nothing physically.”
Tyler Van Dyke was just 24 of 36 passing for 288 yards and a touchdown. He also threw three interceptions. Amid those offensive struggles, Miami led just 3-0 at halftime.
It’s not completely unfair to be concerned about injuries and Tyler Van Dyke. He struggled to stay healthy in 2022, which quickly became one of several major issues for the Hurricanes in a frustrating season. In the off-season, Van Dyke worked to get to lose body fat without losing weight, in the hopes of avoiding injuries and improving his play.
One possible factor that Miami and Van Dyke were dealing with was the change in defensive coordinator at Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets promoted Kevin Sherrer to the role and ahead of the game, Mario Cristobal admitted that this created an unknown for Miami.
Even with the unknowns, Miami was able to move the ball against Georgia Tech relatively freely. The Hurricanes gained 453 yards on the day, but an inability to finish drives and turnovers kept it close late when the Yellow Jackets were able to score in the final moments to win.

Tyler Van Dykes takes blame for turnovers, putting Miami in bad position
The game against Georgia Tech ended in disaster for Miami. The Hurricanes fumbled when they could have knelt on the ball. It was one of five Miami turnovers on the day. Just a few plays later, the Yellow Jackets took a late lead to win.
After the game, Tyler Van Dyke shouldered the blame for the turnovers and for putting Miami in a bad spot late.
“I mean, from my viewpoint, I can’t put us in those situations. Three interceptions, you know, giving them those close fields and them able to capitalize on it. I mean, I put us in the situation. I got to be better. I can’t force the ball, make dumb decisions. I just got to be better,” Van Dyke said.
“I mean, yeah, they had a new defensive coordinator, maybe a few looks different. I mean, it’s football, so one-high, two-high, zone, man, like it’s not too complicated. Just can’t force it into tight coverage and, you know, got to go watch the film and get better. At the end of the day, I got to put us in a better situation. I don’t want to speak on that, but got to put us in the better situations. We shouldn’t have even had that situation where we had to run the clock out, take a knee. We turned the ball over three times, my fault, so we got to be better.”
