Mario Cristobal discusses disastrous first half for Miami against Florida State
The Florida State Seminoles completely dominated the Miami Hurricanes in the first half of Saturday night’s game between the two bitter rivals. The Seminoles blew the doors off the ‘Canes in the opening half, taking a commanding 31-3 advantage into halftime. Florida State outgained Miami in total offensive yardage–304-78. Coming out of the locker room in the second half, Hurricanes head coach Mario Cristobal spoke with ESPN’s Katie George about the train wreck of a first half.

George summarized her conversation with Cristobal. “Well, I spoke with Mario Cristobal coming out of half, Tess, and he said when Tyler Van Dyke got hurt, things started unraveling really fast. And then Jalen Rivers going down was a huge blow. He’s said he’s our best offensive lineman, so we’re gonna need to try to fill that void. But first and foremost, we’ve gotta establish the run. But we can’t be in a hurry. One play does not get us back in this thing. We can slowly work our way back one drive, one play at a time. We gotta see how we can respond in moments of adversity,” George said of her conversation with Cristobal.

Simply put, things couldn’t have been any worse for the Hurricanes in the first half, dealing with injuries to their starting quarterback Tyler Van Dyke and their best offensive lineman, Jalen Rivers. The ‘Canes defense could find no answers for the Florida State rushing attack in the first half and got shredded for 135 total rushing yards. The 28-point halftime lead for Florida State was their largest halftime lead against Miami in in the last 25 seasons, according to the ABC television broadcast.
Things only continued to get worse for Cristobal and company in the second half. Miami ended up losing the game by a score of 45-3, tied for the second largest loss in series history, according to the ABC television broadcast. Not only that, but it was also the largest margin of victory on the road by either team in the series.
