Mario Cristobal on his message to Miami recruits: ‘The Truth’
On3’s J.D. PicKell has been hitting the trail, visiting college campuses and programs as they prepare for spring ball practices. The college football expert has also had a few chats with head coaches of some of the top programs in the sport, such as Miami Hurricanes headman Mario Cristobal.
When recently picking the Miami head coach’s brain on his recruiting pitch heading into year three leading the program, Cristobal kept it real. When recruiting players to play for ‘The U,’ the Miami headman doesn’t use gimmicks or anything like that. He comes with the truth.
“The truth, we give them the truth,” said Cristobal. “If you want to start with academics, it’s an elite private institution, right? I mean, if you take a walk on the campus, it’s hard to beat the classroom setting through the student-faculty ratio and the level of academics that they’re exposed to here. And then the networking systems that comes with going to the University of Miami; the alumni here is as strong as powerful as it gets.”
From day one, Cristobal has said that he plans on rebuilding the Miami football program the right way and will utilize the resources the university has at its disposal. Not only that, but he has kept his word on keeping the Hurricanes alumni close to the program, allowing them to interact with current players. This provides the program with like-minded individuals familiar with the route the players are on.

When it comes to bringing up the program itself in recruiting, Cristobal likes to highlight the commitment the university has to the football program. From training facilities to weight room and practice fields, the University of Miami has provided them with some top-notch resources.
“Then, you spill on over to the commitment that the athletic department has made to football,” he continued. “And with the coaching staff that was hired, the guys that we’ve been able to bring in as high-level teachers, high-level mentors, [and] elite human beings that have recruited diligently to bring in top-level talent; high caliber people that want to be elite in the classroom, on the field, and in life after football. They just get it — like-minded, very driven, self-motivated, [and] that want to have an impact on the community.”
Miami took a step in the right direction from year one to year two under Cristobal, and he is expecting much of the same in year three. Rebuilding the Hurricanes back to their former glory from the previous century was going to be no easy task, which Cristobal was fully aware of. But the Hurricanes headman has remained true to his word and continues to use the truth when recruiting players to play for ‘The U.’
