When Mario Cristobal took over as the head coach of the Miami Hurricanes, he wasn’t going to a team devoid of talent. At one key position, quarterback, Miami knew who the starter was going to be–Tyler Van Dyke. After taking over for D’Eriq King in 2021, he proved that he has the potential to be one of the ACC’s great quarterbacks.

While speaking to the media, Mario Cristobal was asked about quarterback Tyler Van Dyke. In particular, Cristobal was asked how he is settling into the new offense through three weeks.

“I think he’s done pretty well,” Mario Cristobal said. “I do.”

“I think we have to continue to improve the supporting cast. You know, I think we’re starting to protect well. Game two we didn’t protect very well. Game one was very productive, game two had its moments, game three had its moments,” Mario Cristobal continued.

“We’ve got to do a better job overall as coaches and as players to make sure that we give the quarterback the best chance to be successful.”

Tyler Van Dyke’s stats are down in 2022 compared to 2021. In 10 games a season ago, he averaged 293.1 yards per game and 2.5 touchdowns per game. Through three games this season, he only has 223.66 yards per game and one touchdown per game.

Learning a new offense can be difficult. Adjusting to a new coaching staff can be difficult too. Mario Cristobal brought in Josh Gattis to run the offense. As time goes on and Tyler Van Dyke gets more comfortable in the team’s new offense, those numbers should improve.

Tyler Van Dyke’s confidence

During a press conference, Tyler Van Dyke was asked about his confidence levels in the offense, following a difficult Week 3 game.

“Yeah, I mean, I’m still confident,” Tyler Van Dyke said. “I mean, obviously I’m not throwing for 300-plus yards and a lot of touchdowns every game like I did last year. I mean, it’s going to come when I just keep trusting the offense and just keep doing what we have to do and practice. It’ll relate in the game. But, yeah, my confidence level is still there. I mean, I have confidence in this team, confidence in this offense, and we just have to keep going to work every week.”
